Anxiety Often Leads To Emotional Issues In Special Kids

Special Education ProgramsGiving importance to the mental health of children with special needs is one of the most essential tasks of parents as well as teachers. If the mental health of a gifted child is not sane then he/she will not be able to maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers. There might be multiple personal or school problems due to a haphazard mental state and they often cannot reveal those. To handle learners with special needs is a big deal and the same learners with an emotional and behavioral disorder require extra care.

Behavior problems of students with special needs are not an uncommon phenomenon. Thus, special education programs are planning curricula to guide special education teachers so that they associate themselves the best with the special needs students. These lesson plans can be carried out in inclusive classrooms as well as exclusive classrooms.

IS ANXIETY AN EMOTIONAL DISABILITY?

Well, this question has always been a matter of debate over the past decades. To be very specific, nothing should be considered as a disability because sweet are the uses of adversities. Therefore, we always love switching the term disability to special ability. Coming back to the question, anxiety is not a disability or a special ability either. It is a type of mental state that is a combination of fear and excessive worry.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is an added burden to other mental problems and this makes the treatment of a patient more challenging. One of the most dangerous aspects of GAD is that it gives rise to unconditional phobias and in more extreme cases, severe panic attacks.

GAD is curable with proper therapy, medication, or a combination of both. These days, CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is playing a great role in handling anxiety when it comes to kids with special gifts. Students with special needs who are having anxiety fail to build or maintain satisfactory interaction with other people. Hopelessness and sheer desolation affect the intellectual senses or health and this, in turn, develops physical symptoms.

It is not just GAD that is causing tons of problems in specially-abled kids. There are other issues like bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), etc., that cause behavioral problems in kids.

EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL CONDUCT DISORDER:

Kids have the inability to learn that is inexplicable by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. They cannot build strong relations with anyone like friends, teachers, relatives, and so on. Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings in gifted children under normal circumstances lead to severe mood swings or depression. These kids have the tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. All these traits cause a massive emotional disturbance in the minds of that little souls.

STRATEGIES TO CREATE A SPACE FOR SPECIAL KIDS HAVING SEVERE EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCES:

A Personalized system of instruction like coming up with specific objectives with your students is a great approach. Breaking down the course into smaller units, also known as microlearning, helps gifted children to learn better. Assign student tutors where necessary for the more challenging concepts.

A special educator is stuck to writing content over dictating then, it can help kids to get rid of their anxious minds. Special students must be allowed to move at their own pace throughout the curriculum in relevant areas like writing term papers. Once they’re done with the exam, special tutors must give immediate feedback for exams.

Regularly monitoring behavioral assessments and using the results to determine the best instructional and curricular variables for special children is of utter importance. There can be various types of special talents like autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, etc. Each of these has different features and to assess these special traits regular monitoring of behavior is needed.

Students can be asked what causes them to behave negatively with other people. They can be given multiple choices or scenarios to choose from. If tutors do not get any answer from those given choices, they have to help kids to open up regarding issues that are compelling them to behave differently.

The crisis intervention technique is comprised of discussing the student’s negative behavior when the problem occurs. That way, the student is more receptive to behavior reforms while understanding the consequences of not going through these changes.

Thus, special education programs are suggesting the best method to take care of special children having emotional and behavioral problems. These kids encounter several challenges due to such cases that, in turn, develop severe mental and physical health issues. To help these gifted kids to get rid of their stress and anxiety, special educators are playing major roles to the best level possible.
